translation chinese to english

My son is working on a school project where he is at the point of mentioning the Chinese language. He is looking for some basic examples and maybe some explaination to the language. How it derived, if they have an alphabet, etc.
5th grade project, so it needs to be simplified enough for 10 year old kids to understand when class reviewed.
