A good rule of thumb is if you can't get it in a Christian Bookshop, be wary of it.). The NLT is very readable, it's widely acclaimed as a good translation and is available in many study Bibles (e.g. the Life Application Study Bible). Other than that, the NIV is good - also very accurate and I used to use it all the time. For reading, try The Message which is a paraphrase of the Bible, so not good for serious study!
